I’ve been doing a little research on this lately. Besides having adverse affect on the waistline, too much sugar can impact the absence of collagen production in the skin.
The way I see it…Preventative care is mandatory!
Back in the day as a make-up artist for MAC cosmetics, I’d have ladies ask me over and over again how to get rid of the wrinkles around their eyes and how to cover up the sun damage on their skin.
And, they didn’t want to wear a lot of cover up make-up to hide it. Sad truth, there was no other means to cover it up without giving them full coverage make-up.
After explaining how important their diet is to preventing deeper deeper fine lines they chuckled and said they have a bad sweet tooth.
Some facts for you about sugar and wrinkles:
Scientifically, it’s known as “glycation”, which is a natural chemical process that occurs when sugar in our bloodstream gets attached to
proteins, creating molecules that are known as “advanced gylcation end products”. Known as AGEs, these end molecules can cause aging due to the damage they cause to the body’s proteins.
AGEs have been shown to weaken and destroy collagen fibers.
Collagen is an important protein that makes up most of the skin’s supportive structure. Collagen makes up around 97.5% of fibrous protein of the dermis, while elastin constitutes only 2.5 percent.
The more sugar you eat the more AGEs you develop and as it accumulates it creates more damage and the most vulnerable is collagen and elastin, the protein fibers that keeps skin firm and elastic. Once damaged, the springy, resilient collagen and elastin become dry and brittle, leading to wrinkle and sagging. NO BUENO!!
A high sugar diet not only causes havoc for the skin but the waistline as well. Sugar can show up in foods you wouldn’t think.
Eliminating sugar can be a challenge, especially if we aren’t sure of what we should be looking for and what to avoid.
As you begin to learn how to make changes in what you’re eating and how much sugar you consume, you’ll want to keep it top of mind to be kind to yourself as you begin new habits.
Speaking kindly to yourself has been an ongoing challenge to so many women, but the good news is, they found the tips in this guide helpful.
You just may find it useful yourself too…
